Market research with pet owners and veterinarians has shown a definite need for products that our pets will readily consume. It has been estimated that two-thirds of all veterinarian prescribed medications are not finished due to difficulty in administering the product to the pet. Current products are not readily accepted by pets, so they are not convenient to administer and compliance declines.
One of the technologies that we utilize most commonly is a lipid-based delivery system, ConSeal. With access to a broad range of technologies and formulation expertise, we can accommodate virtually any need. All ingredients in our matrices are of the highest quality, and neither artificial dyes nor preservatives are used. In addition, we can design your product such that it is hypoallergenic and without any animal by-products. This can be a valuable asset in light of the global concern over BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease).
The ConSeal system is amazingly versatile in many regards. First, virtually any active can be incorporated into the system and the inherent taste of the active will be masked. More than one active can be incorporated. Regarding taste, any flavor can be achieved. For example, the product could be apple, beef, cheese, fish, liver, molasses or any other imaginable flavor. Flavoring agents can be of natural or synthetic origin. Although not typically used, coloring agents can be incorporated to achieve a certain color. Because the system is inherently stable, artificial preservatives are not typically used either. However, they too can be added.
As for tablet size and shape, this is also extremely flexible depending on the desired appearance. Because the active is distributed equally throughout the tablet and the tablet is easily cut without crumbling like compressed forms typically do, accurate doses can be administered with fewer product strengths, if so desired.
In essence, the following attributes are optimized for each product based on the intended species and specifications, resulting in a truly unique presentation: flavor, scent, size, shape, color, scoring. With so many options, we can design a product that will fit virtually any company's needs.
Over the years, we have worked with a wide array of nutritionals and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Our portfolio includes, but is not limited to: a breath freshener, carprofen, chondroitin, digestive enzymes, enalapril, etodolac, fenbendazole, furosemide, glucosamine, ivermectin, levothyroxine, minerals, phenylbutazone, phenylpropanolamine, praziquantel, prednisolone, proteins, pyrantel, and vitamins. In accordance with FDA guidelines, we have conducted various pharmacokinetic and stability studies. We have performed both formal and informal palatability studies with our formulations in cats, dogs, and horses, and exceed the FDA's expectations for palatability. Our internal standards for palatability are more stringent than the FDA's, in that we do not consider a formulation to be optimal until we achieve a minimum of 80% acceptance. In fact, many of our formulations achieve over 90% acceptance. At your request, we would be delighted to share the results from our studies with you.
